Lilith Fund is seeking applicants to join our Board of Directors! Our volunteer board of directors serves as a governing board that provides organizational and financial oversight, strategic governance, visioning, and support to our staff. 

We are looking for motivated people who are passionate about reproductive justice and excited to put in time and effort to expand abortion access for Texans, and who reside in our primary service area of the southern half of Texas. Reproductive justice is defined by SisterSong as “the human right to maintain personal bodily autonomy, have children, not have children, and parent the children we have in safe and sustainable communities.” Applicants must have a demonstrated commitment to social, racial, and reproductive justice, and strong interest in furthering Lilith Fund’s vision and anti-racist values. Our board meets monthly via video conference call and periodically in-person in Houston, San Antonio, and Austin. Board members can serve for up to five years.

We are looking for candidates who have some of the following experience or expertise:

Financial management & planning 

Fundraising 

Organizational development & operations

Public relations & communications 

Nonprofit management & oversight

Spanish language competency

Labor-forward human resources

Legal & public policy

About Lilith Fund

Lilith Fund provides financial assistance and emotional support for people in Texas who need abortions — unapologetically, with compassion and conviction. Through organizing and movement-building, we foster a positive culture around abortion, strengthen people power, and fight for reproductive justice in and with our communities. Lilith Fund provides direct financial assistance for Texans accessing abortion care in states where abortion is legal and reproductive health care closer to home. Lilith Fund offers a client engagement program, providing leadership development, emotional support, and resource connection to clients, and facilitates organizing and advocacy efforts around the state.

Qualifications

Resides in Lilith Fund’s primary service area (metropolitan areas of Houston, San Antonio, or Austin, or rural areas in the southern half of the state of Texas)

Demonstrated ability to effectively build and sustain durable relationships with a wide variety of people

Availability for a consistent 8-16 hour/month commitment 

Enthusiasm for experimentation and trying new ways of doing things

A commitment to abortion stigma busting, including being a public ambassador for Lilith Fund and pro-abortion fundraising and programmatic initiatives 

Demonstrated commitment to social, racial, and reproductive  justice, and strong interest in furthering Lilith Fund’s vision and anti-racist values  

Experience working with our core constituencies: low-income, women, queer, trans, and non-binary people of color, and people who have had abortions; or lived experience that reflects our communities 

Strong written and oral communication skills and ability to effectively communicate virtually via email, telephone, video conferencing, etc.

Ability to learn new systems or prior experience using business technology (i.e. email, GoTo Meeting, Zoom, Google Suite, Google Meet, Slack, Tresorit, etc.)

Desired Competencies & Assets 

Comfort discussing finances, with either an understanding of financial statements or commitment to learning about financial oversight

Curiosity and eagerness to take time to learn and ask questions, and willingness to prepare and engage in tedious work at times 

Takes organizational confidentiality seriously

Collaborative and willing to work as a team

Commitment to open, transparent, and honest communication

Solutions-focused, with critical evaluation and decision-making skills

Ability to be nimble and adaptable in rapidly-changing situations

Responsibilities 

Board responsibilities include:

Attending and actively participating in virtual monthly board meetings and annual board retreat 

Reading background materials, financial statements, and agendas prior to the meeting, and preparing questions

Assisting in carrying out the board’s fiduciary responsibilities, including reviewing the monthly financial statements, and providing necessary financial oversight 

Staying in regular communication with other board members and Lilith Fund staff 

Creating an individual plan to identify annual board service goals and participating in annual self-evaluation of personal board service

Actively contributing to organizational fundraising

Acting as a positive ambassador for the Lilith Fund in personal networks and communities

Committing to professional development trainings when necessary

Collaboration & partnership with the Executive Director to support their work and development

Participating in creation of strategic planning as well as spur-of-the moment decision-making and thought partnership

Building relationships with other Board members, Lilith Fund staff, and other stakeholders, to build a collegial working relationship that contributes to our community

Respond to requests for feedback or decisions between meetings in a timely manner

Lilith Fund meetings and events take place in several cities throughout our service area (primarily Houston, San Antonio, and Austin). You may be expected to travel within the service area for meetings, trainings, retreats, and fundraisers. In these instances, Lilith Fund offers child care reimbursements and covers travel costs for board members.
